MSSA Frequently Asked Questions

Q: This will be my child’s first summer at MSSA, how do I assure that she will be in classes with peers of her age group?

A: Most of our class selections are broken down into age groups so that campers are in groups of similarly aged kids.

Q. When do the course selections come out?

A. Course selections will be available in June.

Q. What if my child doesn’t get into the classes that he likes or is not in class with his friend?

A. We make our best efforts to put campers into their first choice of classes. We offer some very popular classes during several periods to allow campers to take the classes they choose.

Q. If my child decides she wants to change her schedule after the first day, how does she do that?

A. There is a drop/add period during the first few days of each session.  Campers work with their advisor to find a class to change into first.  Once the instructor of the new class grants permission, campers inform the instructor of the class they want to drop that they are switching out.

Q: My child has medical concerns – do you have medical staff on-site?

A: Yes, we have a full-time RN on site during all camp hours and a NP that is on call and is often on campus. All staff members are trained in First Aid. You are welcome to speak with our Nurse or Nurse Practitioner prior to the beginning of camp.

Q: I know lunch is included in tuition- could you tell me more about that?

A: A nut-free daily lunch is included in tuition. Your child will be given a menu on Monday so that he/she can choose his/her lunches for the week. There are always vegetarian options. Our kitchen staff is aware of all camper allergies.

Q: Are there any additional fees for classes (i.e. lab fees)?

A: No, we have eliminated lab fees. Tuition includes a camp t-shirt, course materials, daily lunch and admission to all show week performances for each camper.

Q. When do campers choose their Workshop courses?

A. Workshop choices are made on the Monday of each week and include choices that are less intensive than the course selections.

Q. What is the plan this summer with the construction on campus?

A. Immediately after Middlesex School graduation, the hockey rink/tennis courts will be converted into a large theater.   The school has purchased staging and seating (and pulleys, etc.) to create at stage that will be used for all MSSA productions and noontime shows as well as Middlesex performances during the theater renovation at the school.   The seating area will actually provide more seats than the current theater holds.

Q. I hear that enrollment will be limited this year –what does that mean for returning campers?

A. Enrollment will be limited because camp has grown significantly over the past few summers and we will be using all new spaces for the summer of 2017, including the new Rachel Carson Music and Campus Center, which will open in June.   We suggest registering as soon as possible to assure your child a spot.

Q. My child is worried that camp will feel different without the theatre. How can I reassure her?

A. Although we were initially worried about how things would look for camp during this construction period, we are now very excited with the plan we have in place!  This summer almost all classroom spaces will be air conditioned, we are bringing in some new instructors and adding new course options, and the theater, although unconventional, will be larger and fully operational.

Q. Am I able to tour the campus before registering?

A. Absolutely! Please email Kristen at [email protected], to arrange a tour.
